The Eiger Sanction: Pseudo James Bond misfire, often accidentally ludicrous. Exhilarating mountain climbing scenes don’t make up for films numerous defects and ungodly magnitude. Jack Cassidy as gay, dangerous snoop gives the only artistic performing. Sexy Beast: A retired British gangster, living the life in Spain, is visited by a fierce gangster who desires him to work one more heist. Trendy, aggressive, current day gangster’s film has excellent acting containing a special performance by Kingsley as the malicious perpetrator. Lost Boundaries: This is a penetrating, well-meaning if dull-moving account of a committed, light skinned Negro physician (Ferrer, in his debut) who (with his family) passes for white in a tiny New Hampshire town. Cast includes Beatrice Pearson, Mel Ferrer, Richard Hylton, Susan Douglas, Canada Lee, Rev. Robert Dunn, and Carleton Carpenter. (99 minutes, 1949)
All about Eve: Brilliantly advanced (and skeptical) look at life in and around the show, with a mecca script by director Mankiewicz (based on the tale “The Knowledge of Eve” by Mary Orr). Davis is positively on point as an aging megastar that takes in a loving fan (Baxter) and eventually finds that the youthful lady is taking over her life. Cast includes Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Thelma Ritter, Marilyn Monroe, Hugh Marlowe, and Gregory Ratoff. (138 minutes, 1950)
Rhapsody: 3 way romance amid opulent Taylor, violinist Gassman, and pianist Ericson. Cast includes Elizabeth Taylor, Vittorio Gassman, John Ericson, Louis Calhern, and Michael Chekhov. (115 minutes, 1954)
The Far Country: Cattleman Stewart, a verified hermit, brings his herd to Alaska and finds nothing but trouble. A different Western set against vibrant backdrop of mining camp towns.
