Ocarina of time may look terrible nowadays but don’t forget that it’s one of the best looking N64 games. Back in 1998, Famitsu rated it 40/40. It was the first game ever to obtain a perfect score. GameSpot put this into words: “A game that can’t be called anything other than flawless.” So you have figured out that graphics weren’t a complaint at the time.
