If your computer’s performance and data are important to you, I would suggest you think about purchasing a security product. Besides protecting important information (credit card numbers, financial data, etc) and computer data, keeping your computer free of badware can significantly improve its performance. After I thoroughly clean my friends’ computers, they feel like their machine is running faster than ever. Some of them even were considering buying a new computer because they thought theirs wasn’t fast enough anymore.
There is a pretty good reason most of the best products charge money. They offer significantly better spyware detection than the free products. Given how much you spend on a computer, purchasing an effective badware cleaner is a small price to pay.
If you do decide to buy a product I would recommend one of the two options below.
If the computer you are trying to protect is a business computer, I would recommend the two products from itSoftware (http://itSoftwareProducts.com ). Repelit and Scrubit offer the best protection out there right now. However, the company only sells to businesses, so if you are a home machine, you are out of luck.
If you need a product for a home computer, I would recommend Spysweeper. It is the best product available for home computers at the moment.
Download Norton, AVG , Avast which are free antivirus software. They do protect your computer and you can keep updating them once in three days or so. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
i use spybot search and destroy. adaware is good too by lavasoft.

I found a really neat place where you can download FREE Google Software. It has programs like Adobe, Virus Protection, Spyware and many more. It is legit…..it is through Google. Click on the link below and you will see it on the right side, toward the top. Someone told me about it….Really cool!

I don’t believe that there is one “best” one in the bunch.
All of them work well together and take up little space on your hard drive.
For FREE programs, I would recommend that every computer have at least these programs
Adaware
Sypbot
CCleaner
and a good anti virus program. DO NOT install more than ONE anti virus program. Running more than one will cause problems
Then I recommend that people do a FREE on line scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com at least once a week, before they do a disk defrag.
If anything if found, after running all this, stop by http://www.geekstogo.com and they can help keep you safe.
AVG Spyware and Advanced Windows Care Personal work well. Run one than the other.
