A really good chef knife and cutting board. There are few things in the kitchen you will use with such regularity. A knife that can save you time both by being effective and efficient for a wide variety of tasks will save huge time and energy both in the act and in clean-up.
Gadgets are great. I have a few. I do not use each one everyday, but my knife and board – early and often.
Side note – coffee grinder just for spices – cheap, efficient and worth having in my view since I do bulk spices and prefer to buy whole.
I have lots of tools and appliances, however, the best thing I have is my meal plan book. a simple 3 ring binder……and includes menus for visitors e.g. who is allergic to what & what their preferences are. I plan 3 weeks in advance because I live alone and in order to eat well, save wasting food, I plan…OK I’m flexible but I don’t have to be figuring out balanced meals every day. 3 weeks is the best schedule for planning the meals as well as purchasing the foods required – this also saves money as I can watch for particular food sales. I have done this for two years now and save about 50% on the cost of food and have delicious meals as well. As I said at the start I have lots of tools and I use them all but with a plan to start with I do a lot of cooking & prep work one day that lasts 3 or 4 days and covers 9 to 12 meals without spending a great deal of time in the kitchen.
an automatic iron…one that did everything including putting itself away after the shirts are ironed.
reason? – ironing is a total waste of my life & i hate it!!
