Black Fury: Hard hitting melodrama in reference to exploitation of coal miners, with Muni as a strong “hunk” who gets in over his head. Practical, and remarkably filmed, but it’s a tad choppy. Blind Date: Tiresome retread of all-too familiar farcical material by Blake Edwards. Yuppie Willis takes Basinger out on a pre arranged blind date, urged that she shouldn’t have alcohol and instantly gives her champagne. This film is hilarious. This was Willis’ featuring debut; guitarist Stanley Jordan makes a lyrical appearance. Cast includes Kim Basinger, Bruce Willis, John Larroquette, William Daniels, and Graham Stark. It Takes All Kinds: Fair triple-cross drama in reference to Miles’ guarding of Lansing after the man inadvertently kills a sailor in a fight in Australia. Cast includes Vera Miles, Barry Sullivan, Sid Melton, and Dime Sugg. (98 minutes, 1969)
Pulp Fiction: This is Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece work. The story weaves around four separate, yet intertwined events. There was an accidental killing, the crime bosses wife’s overdose, the boxer who didn’t throw the fight, and pair of small time crooks trying to rob a restaurant.
The Last Shot: Amusing charade, empowered by a real tale, telling the story of an FBI man (Baldwin) who makes believe to produce a film so he can trap a mobster with ties to the Teamsters union. Baldwin starts to like his “role” as a movie producer, as he turns his idea into reality. Cast includes Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, Toni Collette, Tony Shalhoub, Calista Flockhart, Tim Blake Nelson, Buck Henry, Ray Liotta, James Rebhorn, Jon Polito, and Pat Morita. (93 minutes, 2004)
China Girl: American photographer in the bizarre Orient throughout WW2 is background for incredible adventure story. Cast includes Gene Tierney, George Montgomery, Lynn Bari, Winner McLagen, Sig Ruman, Bobby Robert Cook, and Ann Pennington. (95 minutes, 1942)
Accattone: Accattone is an unforgiving expose of the lives of the crooks and pimps in the ghettos of Rome. In particular we follow the life of Vittorio Accattone, a pimp whose life is coming unraveled. He becomes a pitiful figure trying to find his way. Franco Citti, Franca Pasut, Roberto Scaringella, and Adele Cambria are the stars. (1961 Foreign-Italian)
Star Trek: Nemesis: The Romulans have a new leader in power. Since they are the closest starship in the area, the Enterprise is sent to the neutral zone to speak with Preator, the new Romulan leader. He has told the Federation he wants a peace treaty. When the Enterprise arrives they find themselves in the middle of a situation that could lead to the destruction of Earth.
The Mark of the Hawk: Abnormal story intelligently performed, set in modern-day Africa, with peaceful vs. violent means for racial equality the prime topic. Cast includes Eartha Kitt, Sidney Poitier, Juano Hernandez, and John McIntire. (83 minutes, 1957)
