At present is the greatest point in history to be a movie connoisseur. It used to be that the only way you could see a good movie was to visit the movie theater. Soon after video stores came on the scene but you had to go over there and many times the movies were out of stock. You also needed to be anxious about getting the motion picture back to the store in a timely manner or you had to pay a late fee. Even now when you can get films in the mail, you still have to wait.
Above the Law – This is Steven Segal’s breakout movie. He plays a Chicago Cop who takes matters into his own hands. As the title implies, he is ‘above the law’. He uses his large body and martial arts skills to wreak mayhem on the bad guys. Stars include Steven Segal, Pam Grier, and Sharon Stone. (1988 Action)
Far and Away – A scrappy Irish tenant farmer hooks up, in uncertain style, with the comparably lively daughter of a affluent landowner, and together they journey to America to look for their final destiny in the’93 Oklahoma land rush. Outstanding platform for Tom and Nicole, who are both good-looking and involving; the problem is a drastic lack of good dialogue to fill the gaps between fight scenes. Cast includes Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky, Barbara Babcock, Cohn Meaney, and Rance Howard. (140 minutes,’92)
Forgetting Sarah Marshall – Here is a romantic comedy set in a beautiful resort in Hawaii. After being dumped by his girlfriend Sarah, he at last decides to go to Hawaii to get over the loss. Unfortunately, when he goes to check in at the resort, the first person he sees is Sarah, and of course her new boyfriend.
Clue – Silly and insipid mystery based on the fashionable board game of the same name with all the identifiable characters Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, Miss Red, et al. gathered for a murderous day in a Victorian mansion. Everyone tries tremendously hard but there is nothing they can do to save this weak film. Cast includes Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Ponder, and Howard Hesseman. (87 minutes,’85)
Inferno – American returns to N.Y. from school in Rome to explore the gruesome death of his sibling, and finds “sinister moms” wreaking paranormal pandemonium on both sides of Atlantic. Surreal, mesmerizing shocker by Italian terror genius Argento does not make much sense, but it has a lot of style. Cast includes Leigh McCloskey, Irene Marvel, Sacha Pitoeff, Daria Nicolodi, Eleonora Giorgi, Veronica Lazar, and Alida Valli. (107 minutes,’84)
Rampage – Pregnant Long Island housewife, unable to contend with married life escapes her husband and picks up a simple minded football player on the street. Cast includes Michael Biehn, AIex McArthur, Robert Duvall, Marya Zimmet, Tom Aldredge, and Laurie Crewes. (97 minutes,’92)
