i live in illinois and the winters are harsh i guess. But is it worth it to get a remote starter. Can’t i just start the car and drive right away because the engine heats up faster that way anyway? or what is the main reason of a remote starter?

A decade ago remote starters were very rare, and as always they are a nice feature on cars especially if you live in a cold area. (So are heated seats in those areas).
The main reason for a remote starter is simply to start the car up and allow the engine to warm up (helps the oil flow a little, but these days with multi-viscosity oils it’s not as necessary as it was in the past) as well as warming up the passenger compartment.
not really.. but if you like to get into a warm car then it would be useful.
If you leave the defrost on, it is easier to scrape the frost off your windshield on really bad mornings
The remote starter is so you don’t have to go out into the cold to warm up your car. It’s for convenience only.
car starters are only for convenience. as long as you dont rev your engine excessively by time you buckle your seat belt and adjust your mirrors its warm enough to drive. it may not produce enough heat to defrost your windows which is of course unsafe. car starters are nice but you’ll find you wont properly clean the snow from the vehicle any more. i live in the canadian arctic its currently -27c and i dont have a car starter. its nice to watch the oil pressure gauge when starting a vehicle and thats hard to do from in the house.
its all personal preference. Techincally you should let your car warm up to let the oil get to your valves. But its really up to you. I like it cause i can get in the car and not freeze.
You need to let the car sit while running especially in the cold weather because you need to let the oil in the engine warm up- if you just start the car up without warming it, you could damage the engine!
