For Love of Ivy – A family wishes to hang on to their servant, so they find her a man to keep her happy. The motion picture is a ho-hum black romance at best. Cast includes Sidney Poitier, Abbey Lincoln, Guy Bridges, Leon Bibb, Nan, Martin, Lauri Peters, and Carroll O’Connor. (102 minutes, 1968)

After Life – This is a wonderfully crafted account of case workers at a train station between the heavens who aid the recently departed to select a lone minute from their pasts to live within eternally. This is a tranquil, poetic assessment of life, death, and memory, filled with soft humor and blessedly free of some feel-good platitudes. Cast includes Aarata, Erika Oda, Susuma Terajirna, Taketoshi Naito, Kyoko Kagawa, Kei Tani, Takashi Naito, and Yusuke lseya. (118 minutes, 1998)

The General Died at Dawn – Fine drama of Oriental intrigue, with mercenary Cooper falling in love with foreign agent Carroll when combating ominous warlord Tamiroff. Cast Gary Cooper, Madeleine Carroll, Akim Tamiroff, Dudley Digges, Porter Chamber, and William Frawley. (97 minutes, 1936)

Slavers – (1978-German) C-I02 Slavers is about the slave trade commerce that went on in Africa during the 19th century. An first-rate cast is saddled with second-rate script.
