Keoma is something like “The Last Spaghetti Western”. The film came out right at the end of the genre’s lifespan as a marketable commodity, and it seems to look back upon the era with a sense of both nostalgia and sadness. It’s something of an apocalyptic film as far as spaghetti westerns go, and definitely one of the all time must see movie downloads as far as the genre goes.

The movie is sort of based on Django, which also starred spaghetti western legend Franco Nero. The story follows Keoma, a half Indian gunfighter who returns to his hometown after years away. The town is taken over by a plague as well as by the evil land baron. The plague is an interesting detail, turning the movie into something of a spaghetti western version of the Seventh Seal.

The existentialism of The Seventh Seal is here in more than just plot details. The film is full of bizarre, strange, unpredictable moments, just like life. It’s not quite as surreal and bizarre a film as El Topo, but it is eerie, strange, weird and haunting in both the story, which is full of odd twists, and the incredible atmosphere, which will blow you away and creep you out.

Keoma is on a quest to liberate the town from the corrupt baron who runs it. Along the way, he has to duke it out with his three brothers. All four love their father, their father loves all four, but the three hate Keoma and Keoma hates the three. They call a cease fire upon one another for as long as their father lives.

The movie uses an interesting soundtrack, mixing that great spaghetti western sound with some interesting folk music. The music might not be your thing, exactly, as it’s very “hippie” as far as these soundtracks go, but it’s interesting to hear something different on a spaghetti western soundtrack for a change.

The movie is very imaginative, with more clever, weird, funny ideas than a dozen other movies put together. In one scene, Keoma shoots it out with a gang of bad guys, spares one of them, and then hands him the live round that could have killed him. Later in the film, Keoma is tied to a wagon wheel and starts rolling, rolling all the way to safety. There are a lot of really cool “WTF?” type moments in the film just like that one.

The thing that makes the story work so well is that really is about family. We can all relate to stories about family, so the movie resonates with just about every viewer, whether or not you’re a huge fan of spaghetti westerns. The film is based in the sort of material that is of great value and importance to every living man, woman and child.

The movie is loaded with great action, weird atmosphere, cool, strange music and fascinating characters. It’s exciting, thought provoking, surprising, moving and just plain odd and eerie. It really is a one of a kind film, not just in the spaghetti western genre, but in all of film, period, and it really does take a whole new meaning to the term “revisionist western”.
