Fist of the North Star in the US, or Hokuto no Ken in Japan, the series is simply one of the greatest things ever to come out of Japan. Forget Tale of the Genji, Hokuto no Ken is the real national treasure of the country’s storytelling abilities. The show is based on the legendary comic series by BURONSON, the only comics writer who’s a bad enough dude to have named himself after the Death Wish star Charles Bronson. It really is a great example of elaborate, epic storytelling, as well as one of the greatest tv shows of all time, so put it on your tv and movie downloads queue next time you want some really great action storytelling.

The story picks up in the future after the end of the world. It’s sort of a Mad Max style landscape where guns and modern technology have been replaced by brute force and martial arts as key factors in world politics.

The hero of the story is Kenshiro, a martial artist who practices a deadly form known as Hokuto. This style allows Kenshiro to destroy his opponents with little more than a finger poke. He can jab an enemy in a pressure point, causing their body to turn against itself. So he might poke a bad guy in the kneecap, and seconds later, his entire skeleton has twisted into a grotesque mess. They always come up with new ways to make bad guys die in this show.

However, the story actually goes much, much deeper than just “Kenshiro makes guys explode”. It’s really not about the action, but rather, it’s about compassion, love, understanding, how forgiveness is the only thing that can conquer the ideas of hatred and revenge and destruction.

This theme is very well exemplified in the episodes following Souther, a character who is defined by his hatred. He has divorced himself from love and compassion out of a misguided belief that love is the root of all human suffering and pain. So Kenshiro’s duty is not to destroy Souther, but to save him from himself.

The way it all goes down between Ken and Souther is brilliant, and we don’t dare spoil it for you, save to say that, if it doesn’t put a tear in your eye, then you’re probably just not paying very close attention to the story.

The look and style of the show are incredible. The show was made on an incredibly low budget, so the animators and directors had to use their imagination to come up with ways to make the series have a good look to it, in spite of its dirt cheap budget. The result is a show that looks cheap, but it looks cheap in the absolute coolest possible way. You’ll laugh at some of the cheap tricks they use to pull it off, but others will really serve as part of the style.

So whether or not you’re a big anime buff, you should really consider checking it out nonetheless. Hokuto no Ken is, without a doubt, one of the greatest animated series of all times from any country.
