AVG Anti-Virus and AVG Anti-Spy are the best for system resource usage and validity. Both are free and offer free updates.

I would reccomend AVG. I know you say you don’t want any trial-period software, but if you happen to change your mind, I HIGHLY reccomend Windows Live OneCare. It works great! I wouldn’t imagine using anything else. It has a 90-day trial, so it’ll last you a while. Then when your trial is up, just uninstall and re-download it again.

I like spysweeper and adaware. The best defense is a good offence though. Spyware (except in some extream cases) does not just jump onto your computer. 99% of the time you can only get a bit of spyware by clicking on banner adds or links or attachments in suspicious email. No matter what the banner add promises or how flashy or cute it may be, don’t click on them. And delete suspicious emails.
