Since 1989, John Grisham is a favored American author. Concentrating largely on legal fiction, his books have sold over 250 million copies worldwide. At the time of this writing, he’s authored 17 legal fiction works with one more anticipated, 4 non-legal novels and one non-fiction bestseller. There were 10 films produced from his writings, with one in the works.

The initial movie coming from one of his novels was “The Firm” from 1993. Tom Cruise plays a Harvard law school graduate who begins working for a Memphis law firm with connections to the underworld. Also starring Jeanne Tripplehorn and Gene Hackman. Again in 1993, the next film coming from a Grisham novel arrived on the scene. “The Pelican Brief” starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.

In 1994, “The Client” was released. In this movie a young boy accidentally witnesses a suicide and he is consequently chased by the mob for what they think the dying man may have told him. “The Client” featured Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones and the late Brad Renfro.

The initial published and the one which many consider to be Grisham’s best story to date is “A Time to Kill”. This particular book was made into a movie in 1996. The film introduced a new and upcoming actor in the lead role, Matthew McConaughey, also starring Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. One more movie from 1996 was “The Chamber” starring Chris O’Donnell, Gene Hackman and Faye Dunaway.

Matt Damon took the lead role in “The Rainmaker” in 1997. He played a rookie lawyer who takes on a powerful insurance company regarding a boy denied medical treatment. In 1998, “The Gingerbread Man” starring Kenneth Branagh and Robert Downey, Jr. came out. This is the only Grisham movie that you will not be able to find as a novel because it came from an unpublished manuscript.

Two of the non-legal fiction works by Grisham have also been made into movies. “A Painted House” came out in 2003 and in 2004, the holiday favorite, “Christmas with the Kranks”, starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, based upon the story “Skipping Christmas”.

In 2003, “The Runaway Jury” was released. This film featured Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, John Cusack and Rachel Weisz. “The Associate”, a newer novel which was just in January 2009, is planned to be a movie release around 2012.

Grisham has definitely been just about the most popular and prolific writers in the recent past. With 22 published works out and another planned for November 2009, 10 movies and one more planned for 2012, he has never failed to entertain us.
