1942 was a big year in motion pictures. But probably the greatest movie to come out was Casablanca. If you are a fan of classic black and white movies that are both beautiful and exciting, then this is a movie you surely shouldn’t miss.
Michael Curtiz directed this fantastic action drama starring the beautiful Ingrid Bergman and the talented as well as handsome Humphrey Bogart. With a supporting cast including Claude Rains, Paul Henreid and Peter Lorre, this classic will forever be a classic to both the young and the young at heart.
This captivating movie is set during World War II. A tragic and beautiful story about a man struggling with himself between love and virtue. Ilsa, played by Ingrid Bergman, is the ex-lover of Rick, played by Humphrey Bogart. Ilsa is trying to escape Morocco with her husband, Victor and Rick has the means for their escape. But will his pain and longing for Ilsa keep him from letting her go?
The Nazi’s who are stationed in Casablanca, Morocco know that Victor is the leader of the Czech Resistance and are planning to do anything to make sure he stays where he is. Ilsa approaches Rick, believing he has the letters of passage she and her husband need to leave, but Rick refuses her, not wanting to get involved in the politics. When Rick is resistant to Ilsa, she comes forth with the reason she left him stranded at the train in France so many years prior. She was married then to Victor but believed him to be dead in a Nazi prison camp.
After her touching story, Rick forgives her and they begin a plan to help Victor escape. But Rick makes her believe that she is to stay there with him in Morocco. He insists Victor move on and she stay with him.
Later, Victor is arrested on some made up charges. The Nazi’s believe he is trying to leave Morocco but soon Rick convinces them that he is going to use the letters to leave for America with Ilsa, leaving Victor behind. He convinces the authorities to let Victor go. Instead, tricky Rick has Victor waiting in the plane, ready to leave for the states. In one of the most famous and touching scenes in movies, Rick tells Ilsa to go with Victor. That if she stays with him, she will regret her choice.
While this is one of the most beloved scenes in movies, Casablanca has one of the most famously misquoted quotes in movie history. Many people mistake the quote by saying, Play It Again Sam. In fact, this quote is not even close to what happens in the movie. Neither Ilsa, nor Rick use that quote. In fact, what Rick tells Sam is You Played It For Her, You Can Play It For Me. If She Can Stand It, I Can! Play It!
A terrible tragedy happened in the 1980′s. Ted Turner made the decision to colorize the movie, much to the dissatisfaction of television viewers. Only three million people tuned in to watch the color version of Casablanca. When asked why he did it, Ted Turner took full credit stating, I Did It Because I Wanted To. Thankfully, the movie was available for a short time on video then disappeared once again. Luckily we will not have to watch what many people claim as a bland version of a terrific movie.
But, how can you study the piano if you aren’t really sure what you’re supposed to be doing’ Dowload Movie To That may be an overstatement, but the way I see it, he is at least on life-support. Your mental filters are the reason why you may experience a movie differently on different viewings.
