Keep it away from water, don’t drop it and use a soft lint free to keep it clean.
Keep your batteries charged and have a couple of spare memory cards so you don’t have to skimp when you are shooting.
If your camera’s screen is still unscratched, put a piece of clear packing tape over it. You have to apply the tape in one smooth motion with no bubbles. It’s really difficult to do correctly, but if you get it right, you’ll barely see the tape when it’s new.
The tape will get all scratched up over time, so you just peel it off after a year or so, and replace it. It’s like getting a whole new screen, and you don’t have to worry about scratching it.
Keep it safe in a good camera case. They make them with soft lining that won’t scratch your camera or your screen, padding helps as well. The case should have a small pocket for a spare memory card and a spare battery.
Never touch the lens with your fingers…the oils n your fingertips will muck up the lens.
Clean it regularly. Before wiping off the lens, hold the camera upside down and gently blow off any grit and lose dust particles. Next lightly wipe the lens and other camera parts with a soft, dry cloth or lens cleaning paper.
If needed, wipe the lens with a few drops of lens cleaning fluid. Place the fluid on the lens cleaning paper, not directly onto the lens.
The best camera cleaning cloth is made of microfiber, which should be stored in a plastic baggie when not in use. Lens tissue, a swatch from a cotton t-shirt or a soft handkerchief can also be used.
Paper towels, napkins and facial tissue should NOT be used to clean the lens.
Be careful of the camera strap when you set it down somewhere. If the strap is hanging off the edge of a table, it’s very easy for someone to accidentally get it caught on their foot and send the camera flying onto the floor. I’ve seen it happen more than once.
