Part a:)
Not on the Sony firmware.
If you make an OtherOS partition, you can install linux and you can play any game that runs in linux AND doesn’t require hardware-accelerated graphics.
The ps3′s RSX gpu is locked by the hypervisor, non-native OS’s have no access. So forget about 3D-accelerated games. You won’t be playing World of Warcraft, or America’s Army, or Quake, or any of those type of games.
You also can’t use the Wine windows emulator (which allows WoW on linux-PC’s) because it only supports Intel cpu’s.
Games that use a lot of RAM will run slow or not at all on ps3 because it only has 256MB of system RAM, and the 256 MB of video RAM is, as mentioned above, unuseable.
While there are a few bootable linux games in existence, there are none that have been configured to be bootable on a ps3. So to part B, the answer is no.
I play some of my favorite old DOS flightsims on my ps3.
A- …wow…
B- ……….WOW……….
