While NBA stars like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James get most of the attention on the court, basketball is still a team game. To be successful, squads must utilize every player on the court, taking advantage of their unique abilities to work together as one well-oiled machine. The same is true in NBA Live 10 for the PS3 and Xbox 360, in which gamers must use their entire team, rather than relying on a single superstar to save the day. Sure, LeBron or Kobe might carry a team for the bulk of a game, but the supporting cast must be ready to step up when needed. To ensure this happens, it’s important to understand each of the five positions, and to use your players properly. Here, we break down each position – point guard, shooting guard, small forward and center – to help you claim glory in your NBA Live 10 battles.

The best teams have a dominant front line, so we will begin by looking at the center position. This is usually the most physically impressive player on the court, charged with controlling the paint on defense and scoring inside on offense. Looking back at famous NBA centers, one usually thinks of Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Wilt Chamberlain, all guys who were unstoppable on offense and impenetrable on defense.

Finally, the center and the power forward are the big bodies in the middle and rarely stray outside the painted area. For the most part, the guards are the better ball-handlers, passers and shooters, while the big men are usually the better re-bounders and shot blockers.

Next to your center is your power forward, who will also be tall, but generally not as heavy. This player is usually more skilled than your center, capable of knocking down mid-range jump shots and driving to the basket for lay-ups and dunks. The current NBA landscape is filled with high-level power forwards including Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudamire and Kevin Garnett. All of these players are perfect second options on offense, working well with strong point guards and other primary ball handlers. And of course, having a strong re-bounder here to work with your bigger center means opposing teams will have to work extra hard to finish in the lane and get the ball back on misses.

Looking at the wing positions, it can be difficult to separate your shooting guard and your small forward. In fact, the two are mostly interchangeable, with the most important factor being diversity. More specifically, it is ideal to have one wing that can get in the lane, with another who can shoot from the outside. This spreads out the opposing defense, while creating match-up problems. Think about the Lakers – Kobe Bryant and Ron Artest play the wing positions and do very different things. Kobe, of course, is the scorer who can do pretty much everything, while Artest is the bigger player who uses his size to help with rebounding and defense. Obviously, it is no problem if both players can score, but it is usually better to have one finesse guy and one strength guy.

Finally, the point guard is the player who controls the ball and is responsible for involving teammates and giving them the best chance to succeed. Often, the point guard is the team leader, and that is especially true in NBA Live 10. Having a guy like Chris Paul or Steve Nash to run the pick-and-roll and make pinpoint passes is the difference between winning and losing. You will want to bring the ball up with your point guard and look to pass before shooting. So, think you have what it takes to win an NBA Live 10 tournament for the PS3 and Xbox 360? As long as you understand the positions, your job will be much easier. Use your point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center properly to succeed more often than you fail… have fun!
