As the environmental movement pushes on, individuals seek alternative sources for energy that are also renewable. In addition, they look for ways to reduce their carbon footprints and recycle materials whenever possible. Auto manufacturers are doing their part by identifying alternatives to gasoline power for the vehicle. There are several hybrid cars on the market and some fully electric vehicles are being developed or have recently hit the streets. There is another alternative and that is the ability to run your car on water.

Gasoline costs have risen during the past two years and economists predict that this trend will continue. Since many consumers live on a limited budget, they look for vehicles that are very fuel-efficient. They also seek those that will minimize the harmful effects on the environment resulting from emissions. These consumers have recently become more receptive to purchasing cars powered by alternative methods.

The conversion of hydrogen into oxygen and then to electricity is a new technology being explored. The automobile uses this electricity to power and run itself in a process called HHO. The country of Japan recently made the headlines for its work in the HHO auto technology realm. Existing autos can make use of the HHO technology to run on both H2O and gas. The process requires only an electrolysis cell that can be made at home by following one of the online guides or purchasing a kit.

HHO makes use of the electricity from an auto to electrolyze H2O into a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen gases. The result is a substance with two hydrogen atoms for each oxygen atom. This substance, referred to as oxyhydrogen, Brown’s gas, or HHO, is transported to the vehicle’s intake manifold. There, it replaces some of the expensive gas that is used to power the auto. Using one of the online guides or kits to convert their cars, drivers can reduce their vehicle emissions and increase fuel efficiency up to 50 percent.

The Japanese auto company Genepax has developed a prototype vehicle that runs solely on H2O. It actually can run on other liquids such as those from a river, the sea, or even a cup of tea. Right about now, most people are having flashbacks to the movie “Back to the Future.” Maybe those actors were not crazy, just way ahead of their time, because it seems the technology used in the movie has now become a reality.

Genepax uses a component it calls a Water Energy System, or WES, to power its automobile. This WES is really just a fuel cell that creates electricity from the conversion of oxygen and hydrogen. Power is captured from the electricity and used to run the motor that drives the auto’s wheels. The use of water to create hydrogen is what sets the technology used by Genepax apart from standard fuel cell processes.

Whether every vehicle will experience drastic improvements in mileage by using this technology remains to be determined.
