@colormemandy No, the 50mm f/1.8 doesn’t have a focus motor built-in…it relies on the camera having one. That’s why it’s so cheap. The 35mm DX f/1.8 is the one you want.
- Jason
@ThoughtsMedia The 50mm f/1.8 does have one, doesn’t it? Because it says auto focus lens, does that mean it doesn’t have a built in one? If you go to bestbuy.com and type in “2137″ in the search bar, that’s the one I am talking about.
Thanks!
@colormemandy It’s a great lens, but the D3100 doesn’t have an autofocus motor – so you can only buy lenses with a built-in motor like the Nikkor DX 35mm f/1.8 lens. The 50mm f/1.8 doesn’t have a built-in motor…meaning it’s only compatible with the higher-end Nikons (D7000, D90, D300, etc.).
- Jason
@ThoughtsMedia Okay, some people have been telling me to get the “Nikon Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Autofocus Lens” it’s around $130, do you think that’s a good one?
@colormemandy The 18-55 kit lens starts at f/3.5 which will give you some background blur, but not lots – and that’s only at 18mm when it’s zoomed out all the way. You’d have to be really close to the subject you’re shooting to get any background blur at f/3.5. It goes up to f/5.6 at the 55mm end, which, unless you’re outside on a bright, sunny day, will be really problematic. That’s the beauty of f/2.8 zoom lenses – they’re f/2.8 through the entire range.
- Jason
@ThoughtsMedia Alright, thanks. I will look into that. Do you think the lens that comes with the nikon d3100 the 18-55mm can have the lowest f setting to where the background gets really blurry?
@colormemandy Oh, OK then! Totally different thing, I do the same thing all the time (being the secondary photographer). So are you shooting with a D3100 then? I’d say to look for a place to rent a lens – renting a lens is a great way to use an expensive lens without having to buy it outright. If you can handle the size/weight, rent the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8. It’s fantastic for weddings – just remember you won’t be shooting anything up close with it. The 24-70 f/2.8 is also good.
- Jason
@ThoughtsMedia Yeah I get what you mean. It’s a really small wedding, and I wasn’t going to be the official photographer, just attending and taking photos along with the main photographer. I’m a beginner and I don’t think I’m quite ready for that, but thanks
@colormemandy I mean this in the *nicest* way possible, but a wedding is a special time for the bride and groom and having someone who’s a beginner being the official photographer is a scary idea to me – these are once-in-a-lifetime memories that will never happen again. If you know nothing about taking pictures, you’re not going to be able to capture them. I’m sorry if that sounds harsh, but the best gift you can give them is a photographer that knows what he’s doing. Group gift maybe?
- Jason
Hi! I might be shooting a wedding soon, but I’m a beginner and it’s a friend I’m doing it for. I’m doing it for free, and I told her Id do it. Will the lens on this one do good for that? Because someone told me that the lens on this is bad and It definitely won’t work for a wedding or macro shots. Can you tell me what looks best with this lens, & recommend one good for a wedding?
@ThoughtsMedia yeah i did everything it was only the matter of button and i found it
thanks for the help anyway
@thephenomRKO Is the battery charged? Do you have it in the right way? Did you find the power switch? Time to read the manual.
- Jason
hey am not stupid but i connected the battery and can’t turn the cam on
can someone halp me ?
@pooh1234567890 I don’t think you can buy the D3100 body-only, so the lens comes with the camera whether you like it or not.
- Jason
Where you said you get the lens free, it’s not actually free just reduced in price.
@MelxCuTie Oh, on-camera settings are a completely different thing. I don’t have the camera in front of me, but I don’t think Fisheye was one of the on camera editing settings.
- Jason
@ThoughtsMedia no i mean like can you change the settings on it? Because on your part 2 video i saw that there was a ‘fisheye’ option. What is that? I’m sorry for bothering
.
@MelxCuTie No, a fish-eye lens would be optional. It comes with the kit lens (18-55mm). If it came with a fish eye lens, that probably would have been a part of this unboxing video, right?
- Jason
does it include fish eye lens ? do you like the camera?
