The fact is that the greater majority of people go through most of their lives without ever having the need for a large commercial sized waste receptacle. So when the time does come when they do need one, for many folks, and you may be one of them are at a loss as to what to do. What size they should get, etc. You see, there really is more to it than meets the eye.
As an example if you’re like most folks who are renting for the first time, you really only consider the actual “volume” of the trash you’re hauling. That’s the size you will want. The fact is though, that you have to think of the weight of your load as well. Particularly if you are loading up heavy objects. Stuff like scrap metal, and rock will require a larger size than you might think.
The issue you face here is that whoever it is that you rent your container from will only allow you to go so high with heavy materials like broken cement, or metal. In fact they will tell you that for rock, cement or dirt you can only go as high as some 18 inches up from the floor of the bin. Don’t make the mistake of testing them either, or you will get stuck having to unload material.
Still one more thing that you may have neglected to consider, is that you can’t load any hazardous waste materials into a standard haul away dumpster. Things like old motors that haven’t had their oil drained and even old sealed paint cans are considered hazardous, and then you have asbestos. You see a lot of older homes have it in their tiles and siding, even though it’s been long since banned.
Now if you plan on using one of those smaller bins that have a hinged lid on them, you better think about buying a nice lock for it. The risk you face here is that it’s not at all uncommon for other people to take the opportunity to dump their own trash in your bin. Now with a bigger dumpster that might not be a problem, but if you have a small one you can end up full.
The last thing that you need to keep in mind is getting a permit. Now if you have room on your lot or in your yard you won’t need one, but if you have to park your haul away in the street you will definitely need one. A permit is cheap and the company can tell you where to get it, and by the way, if you’re ticketed without one, you can end up with a hefty fine.
