While the G2X cannot be rightly categorized as sexy, its design is a big improvement from its predecessor, the T-Mobile G1. Measuring 4.68×2.37×0.5 inches and weighing only 6.5 ounces, the phone comes up as rather bulky in the smart phones category. However, even when inside the case on, it can easily be slipped into the pants pocket if you remove the chin. Its overall look is sleek and professional looking, but the most striking feature of the phone’s design is the build quality. It has a soft-touch finish and its stainless steel parts make you feel you are holding a premium device and not some mundane plastic gadget.
This device with both the Swype and Android keyboard and an additional QWERTY keyboard laid out in four rows. The buttons on the keyboard a well spaced and are decently sized. Even though the Swype feature is great, the keyboard still offers a more intuitive way to complete tasks. There are also there “quick keys” on the bottom row that you can bookmark commonly used apps as well as a dedicated button for the .com extension. The G2X’s WVGA Super TFT capacitive touch screen is gorgeous and bright. Text is easy to read and videos and images look great. The display also has a built-in accelerometer, a proximity sensor and pinch-to-zoom support that are very responsive.
The phone has a number of other controls. Below the display is an optical trackpad as well as the standard Android shortcuts of Search, Back, Menu and Home. On the right spine is a camera activation key while a Micro-USB and volume rocker are on the left side. One thing however seems to have a flaw: the slider hinge. While the sliding mechanism is smooth and the screen locks directly into place, it sometimes fails to stay in place. At times, the screen drops down when this device is held upside down.
This phone stands from the crowd as T-Mobile’s first HSPA+ smart phone. While HSPA is not technically 4G, it is much faster than 3G with theoretical speeds peaking at 14.4Mbps. However, keep in mind that the network is only available in 65 major metropolitan cities and reaches 100 million people. Some of those cities includes Boston, Los Angeles, New York and the California Bay area.
Accessories are available online for those who would like to customize their phones. A screen protector and a case will prevent dust and scratches on the phone although sometimes it can make the screen fail to detect your touches. There are also other accessories such as car chargers, memory cards, headsets, touch screen pens, skins of different colors, chair holders, cases that come in different colors among others, all tailored for the T-Mobile G2X. These high quality accessories give users an opportunity to take advantage of all the feature of the G2X as well as protect it from weather, scratches and accidental drops.
