Nintendo showed up at this year’s E3 debuting the Wii U. It may have been the top showcase of the conference. The new platform displays a step up in technology of gaming consoles. Also, the Wii U’s part-time standalone controller raised eyebrows, more about this later. But what really keeps game consoles moving off the store shelves, the games, and Nintendo didn’t forget about games.
Nintendo’s new console debut obviously topped most attendees list of must see’s, but that wasn’t all the Nintendo folks brought to E3. I’ve compiled a short list of the Nintendo highlights.
5) Fighting series fans were sent through the roof with announcements of Super Smash Bros. on 3DS and Wii U.
4) Third party games such as Call of Duty and Resident Evil have forced Nintendo to support these games to drive more gaming consumers to the Nintendo product.
At this year’s E3, Nintendo announced titles like Tekken, Batman: Arkham City, Ghost Recon, Assassin’s Creed and more were already in the works. We’re wondering how some of these 2011 titles will be enhanced for Wii U’s 2012 debut, but those are questions for another time. So far, Nintendo seems to be focusing on making sure Wii U is home to all companies and franchises, and that’s a very, very good thing.
3) Two mini-games sold us on the potential of Wii U – Chase Mii and Battle Mii. These two demos utilized the Wii U tablet to remarkable effect, giving one player a completely different experience than others, which is quite remarkable. No doubt there’s plenty more that can be done with this innovative controller, but we were quite impressed with what we saw here. Nintendo needed to sell the people on Wii U, and these two Mii games did that to a considerable degree.
2) Zelda: Now a HD experience. A must see. Do yourself a favor if you’re a fan and search youtube for a trailer.
1) Wii U – We all want a more powerful gaming console and Nintendo delivered. The second generation Wii console is called “Wii U” (pronounced “We-U”) because it’s a system that “we” can all enjoy (casual and serious gamers) but this iteration is also customized for “you”, according to Fils-Aime. But no technical details were revealed during the press conference.
But it’s the controller that actually received the most attention.
Calling the new device a controller may not give full compliments to the capabilities and interactive possibilities it has to offer. It could be referred to as a sidekick to the new console. In some cases, it doubles as an extra controller and can work as a standalone gaming or entertainment device. This multi-functional controller contains a 6.2-inch touchscreen.
The hybrid device definitely kicks gaming up a notch, but it will be hard to predict how it is accepted into the gaming community until it’s potential can be formally introduced and fully tested on the gaming market.
No word yet on how much the Wii U controller will retail or when it will be available in-stores in 2012.
