While your car engine is working and burning up gasoline, it is constantly releasing waste gases. It needs an outlet to make sure that these gases do not build up inside the car and are released safely into the atmosphere. This is where an exhaust system plays an important role. The exhaust system is attached to the engine and it extends to the back of the car and its main purpose is to release these gases into the atmosphere.

Depending on the car make, exhaust systems come with different fitment requirements. This applies across all kinds of car parts. Ford Fairlane parts will be different to Morris Minor parts. Similarly, a Dodge Viper performance exhaust system has different requirements for installation and mounting than a Suzuki Swift exhaust.

There are four main parts of an exhaust system, namely, the manifold, the catalytic converter, the muffler, and the exhaust pipes. The exhaust manifold is the upper end of the exhaust system and is directly connected to the combustion engine. The manifold is mostly made of cast iron and is made in such a way that it collects the gases from the different cylinders and lets them flow into a single pipe.

Exhaust manifolds are usually not too heavy and small in size. However, often the pipe lengths are calculated in such a way that the focus is more on enhancing the flow of the gases rather than it’s weight and size. Here, the manifold is called a header.

The waste gases then go through the catalytic converter. This simple mechanism converts the dangerous pollutants present in the gases into less dangerous emissions. The process of combustion releases gases such as nitrogen gas, carbon dioxide, water vapor, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxide.

The catalytic converter changes these harmful gases into ones that are less harmful to the atmosphere. Besides making sure that the emission is environmentally safe, this small pipe also reduces the smell of gasoline. In a racing car, the catalytic converter is usually removed – this is called a straight-through pipe or downpipe. A racing muffler will be used (or no muffler at all in some cases where noise regulations aren’t an issue).

The next part of the exhaust system is the cat back, which starts at the end of the cat converter. This portion ends at the final outlet and also contains the tube that connects the cat converter to the muffler.

The basic purpose of the muffler is to reduce sounds by reflecting sound waves produced by the engine. It is a set of tubes with holes which reduces the intensity of sound by adding two or more sound waves together.

The exhaust gases and the sound waves enter muffler through a central tube. As it passes through a resonator, a certain frequency of sound is canceled by the wave produced in it.

The final part of the system is the exhaust pipe. This is the pipe that opens up to release the burnt gases and is the part that can be seen. These pipes are often made of metal and aluminum and have to be made in such a way that they can carry any toxic gases away from the car.

An exhaust pipe may be of a larger size than the rest of the exhaust system if it has a fancy chromed tip. This will prevent the edges from rusting and may also help in bringing an improvement in the appearance of the car.

But, most people are glad to finally have a way to get the information that they need. Access to this information can be crucial to regular people, who may need it for a variety of reasons. Until these private databases existed, they had no way of obtaining it. Different databases are privately maintained, so it is expected that they do not all contain the same information. One database might have information that another does not. Just like a detective, you must be persistent in your search, and consider using more than one database, so you will have a variety of leads to follow. If you are persistent, you will eventually get the information you need.
