The Dead or Alive Trilogy belongs on your must see movie downloads list simply because it’s so crazy. You’ve seen action movies, you’ve seen over the top action movies, but you’ve never seen anything quite like these three flicks from Takashi Miike. Every one is out to top the last in terms of sheer craziness.

Dead or Alive Part One was designed to be a way to bring together two hot Japanese stars, being Sho Aikawa, the Japanese Pacino, and Riki Takeuchi, the Japanese DeNiro, so Dead or Alive is sort of the Japanese Heat. However, it’s really nothing like Heat, and it’s sort of designed to fix the problem with that movie, being that the ending wasn’t quite the climax most viewers were hoping for.

We won’t spoil that ending for you, but save to say that it certainly solves the whole anti-climax problem. From beginning to end, the whole movie is like one big super climactic showdown. Every minute you’re going to be seeing something you’ve never seen before, something you can’t believe you just saw, and something you wish you hadn’t seen.

Dead or Alive 2 is one of those rare sequels that blows the original away, even though the original was already pretty good. Aikawa and Takeuchi are recast as two entirely different characters, that parallel their original roles in some interesting ways. Where the first is about a cop and a gangster out to get each other, this one focuses on two childhood friends who have grown up to become hitmen who donate all of their earnings to buying medicine for children in third world countries. This movie is all heart.

This one is much more positive, much more life affirming, and surprisingly sweet and sentimental, whereas the first was relatively dark and negative in comparison. It’s interesting having these two movies, that are so different from each other, and yet have so much in common.

The third film, Dead or Alive Final, goes in the science fiction direction, more specifically, cyberpunk, with replicants and evil dystopian governments. While it might not be the most exciting of the trilogy, it’s worth seeing so you can check out how it ties the whole thing together in such a strange way.

If you like the Dead or Alive trilogy, you should also check out Deadly Outlaw Rekka, which feels like the fourth film in the series in spirit. It has the same sense of over the top craziness and stars Riki Takeuchi in the lead role.

The first movie’s trailer proudly declares that Miike is the dog with rabies of the Japanese film world, and it’s true, it’s not just a clever tagline for the trailer. The guy makes something like five or six movies a year, and has made about one hundred since his debut some years ago. It’s not a healthy love, but they do have some love for each other.

The movie revolves around a very clever gimmick: When Uncle Bart removes the dog collar around Danny’s neck, Danny goes nuts, beating the hell out of anyone in the room. Uncle Bart has trained him to respond in this psychological fashion as such to be a beast when uncollared, and a sweetheart when the collar is on. Throughout the course of the film, Danny’s objective is to learn how to think for himself as such that he doesn’t need the collar to behave civilly.

Danny escapes his boss and winds up in the home of a kindly old piano maintenance man played by none other than Morgan Freeman. Freeman and his daughter take it upon themselves to teach Danny what love and family are really all about, far different from the kind of family Danny had with his Uncle Bart.

There’s a lot of familiar territory here, as Danny beats up all the badguys and they all have a happy ending, but there’s a lot of emotional depth and complexity thanks to the fascinating premise. It’s an old story: Dog escapes his cruel master for a loving master, but doing this story with a human in place of the dog helps to create something that feels new and fresh.

The action in this film is really something. Danny doesn’t do kung fu, he attacks like a rabid dog. It’s more fitting to his character, of course, and it’s an incredible thing to see in action. He bites and scratches, he pulls hair, he just goes wild against his opponents, and it creates a very unique and bizarre fighting style that, of course, would probably be quite ineffective in real life, but is one of those styles like Jackie Chan’s take on drunken boxing that has a lot of personality and expresses the character better than the dialog does.

The movie is ultimately an action flick, and Jet Li beats everyone up and they all live happily ever after and so on and so forth, but there’s a surprising amount of emotional depth and complexity here, as well as some surprisingly great action scenes. Still, you could remove the action and still have a fascinating drama on your hands here.

Gau Fei shows up to save his cousin from the loan sharks and winds up with more than he bargained for, so he has to flee the city while he pulls off a major heist to pay the loan shark back before he returns home.

Fei gets betrayed and what seems like a mission of revenge becomes a mission of redemption. Be on the lookout for the “Rocky Montage” moment about half way through, where we see Gau Fei train himself to shoot left handed and recuperate after being shot at, having his right finger and thumb cut off, and being set on fire.

What really makes the movie work, though, is not the story, but how beautiful it really is. It’s focused on red and blue, images of fire and water, of violence and peace, and the end result is a lot of great contrast with rainy streets and the city on fire. The movie is full of unforgettably beautiful, dreamlike images.

The movie is relatively rare on DVD and never gets played on TV, so if you want to check it out, you’ll have to look on the internet to find it. It’s really worth a watch, though, if you’re a fan of action, and especially if you’re a fan of Hong Kong action.

The movie was sort of the last of the Heroic Bloodshed films, having been made in 1992, the same year as Hard Boiled, just before John Woo and Ringo Lam left Hong Kong to make films in the US. Fist of the North Star in the US, or Hokuto no Ken in Japan, the series is simply one of the greatest things ever to come out of Japan. This theme is very well exemplified in the episodes following Souther, a character who is defined by his hatred. He has divorced himself from love and compassion out of a misguided belief that love is the root of all human suffering and pain. So Kenshiro’s duty is not to destroy Souther, but to save him from himself.

The way it all goes down between Ken and Souther is brilliant, and we don’t dare spoil it for you, save to say that, if it doesn’t put a tear in your eye, then you’re probably just not paying very close attention to the story.

The look and style of the show are incredible. The show was made on an incredibly low budget, so the animators and directors had to use their imagination to come up with ways to make the series have a good look to it, in spite of its dirt cheap budget. The result is a show that looks cheap, but it looks cheap in the absolute coolest possible way. You’ll laugh at some of the cheap tricks they use to pull it off, but others will really serve as part of the style.

The movie uses an interesting soundtrack, mixing that great spaghetti western sound with some interesting folk music. The music might not be your thing, exactly, as it’s very “hippie” as far as these soundtracks go, but it’s interesting to hear something different on a spaghetti western soundtrack for a change.

The movie is very imaginative, with more clever, weird, funny ideas than a dozen other movies put together. In one scene, Keoma shoots it out with a gang of bad guys, spares one of them, and then hands him the live round that could have killed him. Later in the film, Keoma is tied to a wagon wheel and starts rolling, rolling all the way to safety. There are a lot of really cool “WTF?” type moments in the film just like that one.

The thing that makes the story work so well is that really is about family. We can all relate to stories about family, so the movie resonates with just about every viewer, whether or not you’re a huge fan of spaghetti westerns.
