Canon 50d. very fast and light weight and has built in flash for in a pinch situations, it has many automatic features and is user friendly. but if you can get an want to carry an external get the 5d its a semi pro camera. most any semi-pro cams from Nikon or Canon are going to be good but im partial to Canon because that is what i started with and love their gray-line lenses. just stick with one line because glass is expensive no matter which line you pic, unless you have unlimited resources. good luck and welcome to a rewarding ,frustrating, expensive, fun and did i mention expensive hobby!!

I own and recommend the Rebel XS by Canon for its superb photos and build.

Understand something. The features are in the camera body but the “great zoom” is in the lens.
Most DSLR cameras come with a “kit” lens – usually an 18-55 and the XS is no exception. But, to get greater zoom you’ll have to buy another lens.

You may also want to consider an upper level point and shoot camera that comes with a fixed lens that can run up to 300mm (pretty large)

I’m not a beginner, I have used SLR before and for a long time I was thinking to go digital. After thorough reviews I decided Nikon D40 is the best bet, I bought it and DUDE.. it’s a great SLR camera. Very light, easy to work with, enough settings even for a more advanced photographer. Get it.

The biggest favor you could possibly do for yourself BEFORE purchasing a DSLR camera is to go read a couple basic books about DSLR photography and see if it is for you. You are talking about purchasing a camera that costs several hundreds of dollars with no real knowledge. Would you do such a thing when purchasing anything else? Probably not. I’m not trying to talk you out of DSLR photography, in fact I expect you will get even more excited after reading a couple books. But the only way you are going to be able to make an educated decision about this expensive purchase is to do some research and learning on your own.
