Watching One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is a movie about authority. It concerns anti-establishment ideals that were common to the 1970s. It is a very popular movie. Many consider it an all-time classic. It is funny and somber at the same time. It won five major academy awards in 1975. A mental hospital is the setting for the movie. It was filmed in a real hospital in Oregon.

Jack Nicholson plays the lead role. He portrays Randle McMurphy brilliantly. McMurphy is an anti-authority individual that has spent much time in jails. He gets into trouble when he finds out his girlfriend is fifteen. This lands him back in jail. He is sentenced to do time at a prison farm. He knows that this will mean a lot of hard work. To avoid that, he hatches a scheme. If he can get into a mental hospital, his time would be much easier. He tries very hard to convince the hospital staff of his insanity. Eventually they agree with him.

He arrives at the mental hospital. He looks around and sees an environment that he can control. The men seem meek and institutionalized. However, he runs into opposition. That opposing force is Nurse Ratched, played by Louise Fletcher. She rules with an iron hand. She uses intimidation and guilt to get the men do as she wishes. She seems more interested in controlling people than healing them.

Life in the mental hospital is dull. McMurphy decides to liven up the atmosphere. He plays poker with the men. He takes their cigarettes and spare cash. This does not impress Nurse Ratched. In one scene, he lobbies the men top vote for a television show. The World Series is on television and he wants to watch. There is only one TV and he must have a majority of votes to turn the channel. He gets a unanimous vote for the ballgame. Nurse Ratched refuses. She wants everyone to vote, even the ones out of touch with reality. He has to go to them and ask for votes. When he finally gets enough votes, she tells him that he is too late. Unable to do anything about it, he decides to watch an imaginary baseball game. It scores big with the men.

McMurphy bets an inmate that he can lift a large hydrotherapy machine. He struggles but cannot lift it. He is proud that he tried. This teaches the men the importance of effort. They look up to him as a leader.

He also goes on a deep-sea fishing expedition. He takes the inmates with him, on a bus. They have a fun adventure. When they return, there is a big fight with some orderlies. McMurphy and two others get shock therapy as punishment.

At one point, McMurphy finds out most of the inmates are there by their own choosing. This does not apply to him. Nurse Ratched can make him stay there indefinitely. He decides to behave better. Nevertheless, he cannot resist antagonizing her. They struggle for power all through the movie. You may be surprised at the ending.

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is well worth watching. It has good acting and is well written. Newcomers Danny Devito and Christopher Lloyd go on to successful careers.

A Tour Of “Schindlers List” The Movie

This article is slated to introduce you to an influential film that so many people still rave about to this day. This movie was the 1993 instant classic, Schindlers List. There is a lot to know about this film to fully appreciate it, and this article will give you a little bit of that paired up with a detailed plot synopsis that should give you the most prevalent information about the film.

You should be aware that this film is derived from the tyranny that the Jewish people experienced during the second World War. This is the story, though, of a German businessman that intends to exploit the cheap labor of the oppressed Jews during this time. He has a considerable change of heart though, and does not have the heart do to anything but save them after then.

What many people do not fully realize is that this is actually based on the actions of a real man. The account of this movie was incredibly accurate to how things literally transpired around this man in that time. So when this movie says it was based on a real story, this is unlike other Hollywood “based on” movies, which are loosely related to a similar story with no where near the circumstances of a film.

You might also want to know that the man behind the camera likely had a great deal to do with the success of film. The director, Steven Spielberg, is known very fondly for his ability to masterfully bring things to life on screen. People can see and experience stories unlike other directors have been able to retell them. One unique approach to the visual side would have been the movie being in black and white nearly through the entire piece.

The tagline for this film was “Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire.” In his lifetime, Oskar Schindler was able to save about 1100 Jews from their dreadful fate of a gas chamber. They were slated to be executed at Auschwitz, perhaps the most notorious and violent concentration camps of Nazi Germany. This film gives an accurate depiction of the changing of one’s heart towards the plight of these people.

He begins by wanting to start a factory in Poland, while the war is raging on in the background. This factory would be slated to create and manufacture kits for German soldiers. Oskar learns that through the process, he is able to make a list of non-expendable workers. This becomes the difference between life and death for many of the people that wind up on the list. Through the use of this list, Schindler himself ends up very much broke, but able to save 1100 Jewish men, women and children.

A powerful performance by Liam Neeson brings Oskar Schindler to life. Other supporting roles also made a great impact on the climaxes and drama of the film. Performances from Ben Kingsley as Itzhak Stern and Ralph Fiennes as the rigid German Amon Goeth.

At the end of the film, Schindler is in the middle of an intense discussion with Stern. He desperately tells him that he knows in his heart that he could have saved more than he did. He could have sold his car, or saved more money, he could have saved more than he did. This is enough to inspire anyone to rethink how they can value a human life, and it took Oskar Schindler a while to understand himself. Schindlers List was an inspiration and a classic, one that everyone should see and experience.

A Summary Of 12 Angry Men

12 Angry Men was a very popular film in the late 1950s starring Henry Fonda. A jury must decide on a murder case that holds a first degree murder conviction. A 19 year old Puerto Rican but from the inner city is on trial for the murder of his father. His father was stabbed to death with a pocket knife. The jury is instructed that a guilty verdict will lead to a mandatory death sentence and that their vote must be unanimous.

There are twelve all white, male jurors. They are placed in a small, hot room after spending four days listening to testimony during the murder trial. None of these men can relate to the defendant due to their own personal biases. Throughout the story, they address each other based on their jury numbers.

The jurors spend several uncomfortable hours arguing over the facts of the case. Most of them are content with a guilty verdict. But for one juror, the stakes are too grave to rush into a verdict of convenience. Juror number 8 decides to dissent from the popular opinion and persuade his fellow jurors to see past their particular views. And in doing so, reasonable doubt settles into the minds of these men.

The jurors each bring their own personal experiences and biases to the table which make coming to a unanimous decision very difficult. To most, the evidence appears to be overwhelming. Neighbors heard a fight between the son and father. During the trial, a witness said he heard the son threaten to kill his father.

According to witness testimony, they heard the father and son arguing. During that argument, someone heard the son threatened to kill his father. The pocket knife that killed the father was similar to the one they found in the teenagers possession. The facts seem to all line up and the majority of the jurors are ready to make a unanimous guilty verdict.

When you look deeper into the plot, we come to realize this story is a commentary on the American judicial system. Through these jurors, we learn to examine how racial and cultural differences separate us on such a critical level that it can affect a life or death situation. The jurors must decide whether this Puerto Rican teenager from the slums lives or dies. But there particular biases may in fact lead to a miscarriage of justice.

The first vote among the jurors does not have a favorable result for the defendant. Eleven vote guilty. But juror number 8 stands his ground that the evidence is not strong enough to lead to a guilty verdict. And slowly he convinces the others to change their vote.

Juror number 8 is also included in the mindset of 12 Angry Men. He also has issues he must address in order to make a fair and just decision. Juror 8 helps the others to see past their misguided views and see that this is a young man deserving of a fair verdict. Originally the first vote was eleven for guilty and juror number eight being the only dissenting vote. Through his careful analysis and sound arguments with the other jurors, he is able to convince them to change their vote. His persistence for justice saved a life.

Nineties Blockbuster Hit Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump, released in 1994, ended up becoming one of the most successful movies of the 20th century and was based on a 1986 book of the same name written by Winston Groom. The movie starred Tom Hanks, Robyn Wright Penn, Gary Sinise and Sally Field.

When the movie was released it was a huge success and ended up picking up seven Academy Awards the same year including one for Tom Hanks as best actor and earning more than $677 million. The movie gave birth to a number of movie quotes that entered the popular vernacular such as “Run Forrest Run!” and “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are gonna get.”

The plot of the movie centers on Hanks’ character Forrest Gump who is person that is lacking in what most of us would consider intelligence, yet manages seemingly by accident to live a most extraordinary life. Through apparent good luck or coincidence he manages to be present at some of the most historic events of the sixties and seventies and rub shoulders with the leading lights of the time. All this is juxtaposed against his love for a simple life and a completely unaffected view of both himself and the people that he meets.

The movie starts with Gump sitting at a bus stop and he begins recounting his life to a woman who disbelievingly listens to this gentleman tell of his life and its amazing twists and turns. Gump is offered a football scholarship to the University of Alabama and following this enlists in the US Army.

During his convalescence from war injuries he takes up ping pong and becomes a national champion who visits Maoist China as a representative of the United States government. Later on he receives a medal of honor from the President and experiences the fringes of the sixties hippy movement.

All the while that Gump is living some incredible experiences, he keeps being haunted by his love for his childhood friend Jenny. Jenny became his friend on the first day of school and came from an abusive household. As Jenny supported Gump in childhood, Gump supports the damaged Jenny throughout her turbulent adult life and self-destructive behavior.

Both the book and film are an interesting mix of irony, humor and poignancy. The film will make you laugh, cry and feel fondness for your fellow man and that is probably the secret of the film’s immense success. When you finish the movie you are left feeling that we can all be a part of something great and that perhaps by living more simply in ourselves we can achieve more in life.

Forrest Gump is an entertaining and beautiful movie that has become one of the biggest success stories of Paramount Pictures and Hollywood. Hard to believe when you consider that Robert Zemekis was the third director the movie was offered to and the role of Gump was also turned down by several other Hollywood heavy weights before Tom Hanks decided to take it on.
