One of the all time greats of cinematic history is without doubt Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock began making movies in England and eventually moved to Hollywood where he became known as the king of suspense films. One of his classics and most popular films was the Rear Window movie.

Jefferies soon becomes restless and bored by his convalescence and begins to eavesdrop on his neighbors as a way to pass the time. There is much to see since the summer heat prompts many of his neighbors to keep their shutters open for the breeze. He becomes fascinated by the routines and goings on of his neighbors’ lives among whom are a dancer, married couples, a songwriter and a single and rather lonely woman. Then there is a salesman named Thorwald and his wife.

As he is watching the movements of his neighbors Jefferies hones in on Thorwald and realizes that he has not seen his wife for some time, but notices the sales man taking suitcases out of the apartment several times and cleaning a knife and handsaw. He becomes suspicious that the sales man has done away with his wife and sets about investigating her disappearance with the help of Fremont and other friends. Hitchcock builds the suspense in the film as only he can and it is a captivating story that keeps you on tenterhooks until the end.

In addition to the entertainment value of the film it also explores a number of themes throughout the movie that are just as relevant today as they were in 1954. One of these is society’s obsession with voyeurism that can be seen today in our fascination with celebrity. This is paired with Fremont’s love of fashion and celebrity magazines and even Jefferies’ career as a photo journalist.

Another of the themes that is explored are the different types of male-female relationships that are covered. Lisa and Jefferies’ relationship and what each of them wants from it is juxtaposed against the various married couples in the adjacent apartment block, “Miss Lonely Hearts” the single woman and the dancer who seems to throw endless male only parties.

The Rear Window movie is a must see for all fans of the Golden Era of Hollywood. Not only does it offer excitement and suspense wrapped up in a very entertaining package, it also shows two Hollywood heavy weights (Stewart and Kelly) at their finest.
